Explore the delicate filaments of the Eastern Veil Nebula in this fine art print. Deep reds and turquoise trace intricate strands of glowing gas, revealing the flowing structures left behind by a star that exploded thousands of years ago.
Captured across several nights from my back garden in Wiltshire, this two-panel mosaic brings together 240 individual five-minute exposures. With 10 hours of exposure per panel, the finished image combines 20 hours of capture time, using a duo-narrowband filter to isolate light emitted by hydrogen-alpha and oxygen.
The Eastern Veil was the first deep-sky object I photographed with my dedicated astronomy setup, so returning to it a year later felt particularly special. Both images were captured with the same equipment, but a year of learning — from acquisition and calibration to careful processing in PixInsight and Photoshop — made a remarkable difference. It’s a reminder that progress can come from getting to know the equipment you already have.
Reproduced using 12-colour giclée fine art printing, the image combines rich colour with subtle tonal depth on smooth matte paper. A distinctive piece for astronomy enthusiasts, art lovers and anyone drawn to the intricate beauty of the cosmos.
